History of The Mill District In the late 1930s, Minneapolis’ milling business declined and by the 1960’s, most of the once-mighty flour mills on the West Bank had ceased production and were demolished or left vacant. Today, the Mill District is reborn as the historical and cultural center of Minneapolis. Many of the original flour mills have been saved and renovated into elegant loft homes. The wreckage of the Washburn-Crosby “A” Mill, once the largest mill in the world, is now the cornerstone of the new Mill City Museum: a National Historic Landmark and museum featuring exhibits, artifacts, observation deck, and boutique cafe. The renovated Milwaukee Road Depot is “a place for people again” with a popular ice rink in the old train shed. The internationally-acclaimed Guthrie Theater is a stunning architectural gem that dazzles theater-goers from around the world. |
